Miami-Dade to Port St. Lucie
Moving from Miami to Port St. Lucie
How far is Port St. Lucie from Miami?
About 120 miles
from downtown Miami
About 2 hours
with light traffic
2 main routes:
I-95 or Florida's Turnpike
I-95 is free and direct, but it's I-95. Through Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, rush hour can easily add 45 minutes or more.
Florida's Turnpike is a toll road, and most people we know prefer it. It usually moves better north of West Palm, with fewer exits and less stop-and-go. Port St. Lucie has two Turnpike exits (Becker Road and Port St. Lucie Blvd) plus several on I-95.
Tip: Leave Miami before 6:30 am or after 7 pm and the drive is a different experience.

Can you take Brightline from Port St. Lucie to Miami?
Not directly, yet. Brightline runs through the Treasure Coast between Orlando and South Florida but doesn't stop here today. The closest station is West Palm Beach, about 50 miles south of Port St. Lucie.
A planned station in downtown Stuart has been in the works since 2024, but as of late 2026 it's stalled. In 2026 the railroad that owns the tracks objected to the site, and Martin County did not receive the federal grant it applied for. There's no opening date.
Today: Drive to West Palm Beach, park, ride to Fort Lauderdale, Aventura or MiamiCentral.
Stuart station (planned): No construction date set as of late 2026.
Bottom line: Plan on driving, with Brightline from West Palm as a backup for game days and city trips.

What the money actually buys
Same budget, very different house. These are typical examples as of late 2026.
Typical, not guaranteedAround $400,000 in Miami-Dade
- Usually a condo or townhome
- Often an older building with HOA or association fees
- Single-family homes at this price are rare in most of the county
Typical, not guaranteedAround $400,000 in Port St. Lucie
- Often a 3 or 4 bedroom single-family home with a garage
- Many newer homes, including new construction in Tradition and other master-planned communities
- A yard, and sometimes room for a pool
Taxes and insurance: what changes
Property taxes
- Florida has no state income tax, so that part doesn't change.
- Property tax rates vary by county and city. Ask us for the rate on any home you're looking at.
Homeowners insurance
- Insurance is a real cost in all of South Florida. Newer homes built to current code, with impact windows and a newer roof, usually cost less to insure.
- Older homes typically need a 4-point inspection and a wind mitigation report for insurance.
- Flood insurance depends on the flood zone. Check before you make an offer, not after.
What's different day to day

Traffic
There's traffic here, mostly on US-1, Port St. Lucie Blvd and Gatlin Blvd at rush hour, but nothing like I-95 in Miami. Most errands are a 10 or 15 minute drive.

Pace
Slower, quieter and more suburban. Port St. Lucie is mostly neighborhoods, parks and shopping centers. Fewer late nights out, more boating, golf and fishing.

Beaches
The closest beaches are on Hutchinson Island, about 20 to 30 minutes away depending on where you live. They're wide, natural and rarely crowded, more like a state park than South Beach. See our Port St. Lucie Beaches guide.

Commuting to Miami
A daily commute to Miami is tough at 2+ hours each way. It works best for people who are remote, hybrid with a couple of office days, or working in Palm Beach County.

Thinking about making the move?
Many people coming from Miami start by looking at Tradition, St. Lucie West, and the newer communities on the west side of the city. Others want to be closer to the river or the beach. We'll help you narrow it down.
