Port St. Lucie Beaches: Where Locals Actually Go

Here's the thing nobody tells you before you move: Port St. Lucie doesn't touch the ocean. The good news is that Hutchinson Island is right across the Indian River Lagoon, and most of the city can be on the sand in 20 to 40 minutes.

Wait, Port St. Lucie Has No Beach?

Why the beach is "next door," not in town

Port St. Lucie sits along the St. Lucie River. The ocean beaches are on Hutchinson Island, a long barrier island east of the city.

A few things that help it make sense:

  • There's no bridge from Port St. Lucie straight to the island. You cross either at Jensen Beach (south) or Fort Pierce (north).
  • Some St. Lucie County beaches have Jensen Beach addresses. Waveland and Walton Rocks are in St. Lucie County, but the mail goes to Jensen Beach 34957.
  • The south end of the island is Martin County. Jensen Beach Park, Stuart Beach and Bathtub Reef are run by Martin County.
  • County beach parks are open dawn to dusk.

The beaches, south to north

Drive times are approximate from central Port St. Lucie (around US-1 and Port St. Lucie Blvd). Add 10 to 15 minutes from Tradition or St. Lucie West.
